The Freedom Foundation will soon be filing suit against SEIU on behalf of home care workers forced to pay union dues. The foundation hopes to win refunds of dues involuntarily paid by these workers.
[Freedom Foundation legal counsel James] Abernathy says the foundation has set up a branch office in Salem and will hold a press conference Thursday announcing the filing of a lawsuit that it plans to turn into a class action against SEIU and Gov. Kate Brown.
The suit will charge that home care workers who did not want to join the union should be refunded “fair share” dues they paid for years to help the union represent them. The Supreme Court ruled last year that these workers — who are not public workers but are paid through the state — cannot be forced to pay union dues.
